Eve was performing maintenence on her gear, a glass of rum on the table next to her, when she heard the jingling of keys and turning of the lock. Her ears perked up in anticipation while the newcomer made their way over to the living room. Finally, Ariana popped into view, alone but looking a lot healthier than she did early that day.
The first thing Ariana did was hug her surprised sister. “I’m sorry for being so… mopey lately.”
Eve recovered from her shock in record time, hugging her sister in turn. “Welcome back, Ariana.” She combed her messy locks lovingly. She was happy to see Ariana back in one piece and a lot more cheerful. Almost like she was before Mexico. Almost. “Sit down. I want to hear all about your day.”
Ariana told her the whole story, with some hesitation and a few details left out. She told her of the ruin. The things they’d seen inside. The failed confession. The fight between Loveline and Elyssa. And the shopping trip after the ruin, even though Ariana didn’t buy anything during it.
“And what do you have there then?” Eve pointed at a bag Ariana had brought in. The bag rustled when Ariana rummaged through it and pulled out a small box. She shook the top until the bottom clattered out. Ariana showed Eve a shell bracelet that Love had bought.
“Loveline bought this for the whole group.” It was a fairly cheap bracelet, despite Loveline’s protests. She wanted to buy a nicer one, but Elyssa convinced her to scale it down. Ariana didn’t know how to feel about it. She suspected that maybe Loveline only wanted to buy it for her, but everyone else did get one to not feel left out. She wasn't sure where that idea came from, but it was there. Oh, that reminded her of something she left out.
“Love and me are going to the indian place across the street this Friday,” she said.
“Oh, now we’re talking,” Huntsmen slithered out of the shadows to join them. He was wearing a female form, though any illusion of femininity was shattered by the large chicken leg he was chewing on. “Enough of that teen drama, now you're gonna get it on."
“Get it on? Get what on?” Ariana blinked. Did he want her to wear something special for the dinner? An image of the jellyfish dress popped into her head. It was a nice dress. Not something she wore usually, but she did say she might eventually. But it would take a lot of saving up. Eve wasn't going to buy something so needlessly fancy.
“Are you sure about this?” Eve broke her out of her thoughts. “Considering what you just told me, Love might not be stable enough for you to date.”
“Hey, don’t knock it ‘till you try it. Crazy chicks are the best.” Huntsman said with a sharp grin. Eve elbowed him in the ribs, a light hint to shut it.
“It’s not a d-date!” Ariana stammered. “It’s just dinner. As friends. To… to make up for the time we didn’t hang out.”
Neither Eve nor Huntsman bought it. “It’s not!” She protested against their stares, before dejectedly leaning back into the couch.
“I don’t know if I want it to be a date,” she admitted. “I thought Love was nice until the ruin. But she was a bit weird there. I don’t know how to feel about it.”
“But you’re still going out for dinner,” Eve said.
“She’s weird, but she can also be nice. And she likes me and she can be adventurous. And she’s smart. I might not mind being, um, closer with her.”
Eve considered her words for a moment, which gave Huntsman plenty of time to add in his own two cents. “Hey, get your fill of the crazy, that’s all I can tell ya. But if she gets too crazy, I’ma go grab a snack. Teach the pipsqueak to beat some sense into his kids.”
“Huntsman, no eating Ariana’s friends. That aside, this is your choice, Ariana. If you want to give her a chance, it’s up to you. And if she hurts you like Huntsman said, I’ll go have a chat with her and Arthur. That's what I'm here for.” She paused a second. "I love you, sis." She pulled Ariana into a one-armed hug. Ariana surrendered herself to it, gladly sinking into the softness and warmth of Eve's body.
“Huntsman also loves you,” she added.
“Don’t put words into my mouth. Either one of them,” Huntsman said while putting more chicken into a second paid mouth he made to eat while talking. Ariana chuckled.
“Thanks. Both of you. I feel a little bit better about that dinner now. And no, it’s still not a date. Oh, speaking of dinner, I could have some right now,” Ariana said. Huntsman offered a chicken with several sizable bitemarks in it. “Um, no thanks. I’ll just grab something from the fridge.”
“Look in the back first, that’s where we have the older stuff. Eat it before it expires.” Eve said. Then she thought about it more. Ariana finally came to her senses after so long. Maybe she could splurge a bit for her. Yes, she decided. She’d buy Ariana a muffin tomorrow to celebrate. After all… Finally... She’s back.
