Shi no Kaze swirled in the air, making the popcorn roll around in the bowl. “Stop that, you’re going to make it cold before the first act.” Katsuo chided her.
“But I’m boooooored. We’ve watched this movie like a billion times.” She complained. Katsuo frowned, but it was true. Yojimbo was an utter classic, and he had watched it and its sequel Sanjuro probably more than once a month since he was a child. He never got tired of either, but clearly, Shi had.
“Well I guess you also don’t want to watch the other usual movies. What did you have in mind?” He asked her.
“I don’t know, cause I’ve only ever seen what you want to watch.” Shi manifested a pouting mouth and nothing else from her fog.
“Well I don’t really know what to do then.” Katsuo didn’t want to waste movie night digging around for new ideas. His eyes found his phone and he opened up his contact list. Maybe movie night shouldn’t just be him and Shi anymore. He scrolled through. Most of the people he knew now were his coworkers, and, well, they were higher-ranked than him. The idea of contacting them in the evening, it was awkward. Shi wouldn’t like it either. She was already grouchy noticing the women’s numbers on his phone.
“Look, we’ll just skip movie night and-” Katsuo started.
“Nooooo!” Shi wailed. “I love movie night. It’s some of the only time we just hang out together.
“Well I think I have a solution. If you’re okay with skipping it tonight, we can have a bigger one next week, okay?” Katsuo asked.
“Well, okay. But you still need to eat the popcorn I made.”
“When we were kids, we had a VCR set up in the basement. Dad never watched anything with us, but mom sometimes did. I don’t really remember what Mai liked, but back then I really liked the kid-friendly action stuff. Spy Kids, the first Spiderman movie, Indiana Jones. I only found my favorites in college. I saw some of Quentin Tarantino’s movies with Ann and I was in love. We saw The Hateful Eight in theaters and afterwards I tracked down everything else I could get.”
“I think my favorite is Kill Bill. The first one. That fight at the end is amazing. You should ask Mai, too. She cares more about movies than I do. And thank you for talking to me about this. I think I should show Callis some movies.”
“Yeah, I’m the one who set up the VCR. Orochi doesn’t give a shit about movies, so it was up to me. We fought over what to watch a lot when we were kids. I always won of course, so we saw the Matrix a lot. I love those movies. Yes, even the sequels, stop looking at me like that. You’ve gotta watch them like one long movie and it totally works. Oh, while you’re here, Soon, get up and tell him your faves too.”
“Mm. I dunno. Usually whatever Mai’s watching. Nothing on a boat though. The ocean freaks me out.”
“Titanic. Yes, really. It’s hard to name my favorite, but Titanic made me cry the first time I saw it. It’s the best date night movie too, which is what I assume you wanted. No? Well I think you and your friend will still enjoy it. It’s a great movie.”
“Elmo in Grouchland!”
“Fist full of Dollars, High Noon, The Alamo, both versions of True Grit, if you want out of westerns? Citizen Kane, Star Wars, Metropolis, King Kong, Space Odyssey, Wizard of Oz. The absolute classics of western film. You’ve not seen any of them? Ah man, we’ve gotta have a movie night. Invite miss Parker, it’ll be great. Oh, just you and your sword? Well, good luck with that, man.”
“Huh, they all really like American movies, don’t they? Well I guess some of that is down to me. I introduced Akane to a lot of action movies. My favorite? Die Hard. Christmas classic. We should all watch it this year! Don’t use that for your movie night, we’ve gotta all watch that. Invite over our friends, Gianni, Callis, maybe we can get Akane and Mai’s parents to come. Thanks for reminding me of the idea. See you, Kat.”
It was another movie night. Shi curled around Katsuo, flicking popcorn to him from the bucket. “These were good choices. I liked the one with the boat.” She purred. “You should draw me.” Katsuo didn’t argue. He just smiled and reached for the remote. The people above him weren’t frightening Yakuza bosses. They were just people. And damn, they had good taste in movies.
