Gateway - Academy of Summoning Location - A....htm (110.28 KB)
Gateway Academy, also known as the Center for Summoning Magic, is a massive academy located in the northern part of Alberta, Canada. The academy caters to 13-20 year olds throughout it's 7 years, providing one of the best quality educations in magic history, mythical beast studies, spellcasting, spell charms and especially summoning magic, to name a few. The school is highly regarded in the magic community as the best school to send your child to if they are interested in summoning magic, and is also thought of as one of the top institutions for learning the other forms of magic as well.
The academy and the land it sits on is covered in a dome of illusion, making it virtually invisible to anyone not aware of the Hidden World, even in satellite images. This allows for the academy to conduct many lessons outside, where they can summon large beasts without worrying about civilians either getting hurt, or finding out about the Hidden World.
School Structure
The school is divided up into 5 houses, each named after one of the legendary mages who founded the academy, who each represent their own mastery in a particular element of magic. The house names are; Ikkuma, Azur, Zemletreus, Zhenfeng and Schwarzweiss. Each house has a particular wing of the school, where their commons areas and dormitories are located. The dormitories are separated are separated into male and female dorms, which have a magic spell on cast on them to prevent anyone of the opposite gender from getting in without the proper exceptions given to the staff. This is to both prevent students of the opposite gender from sharing rooms, but also to protect the students from any form of teleportation magic that a mage may try to use to get into the dormitories and possibly harm students.
Each house is decorated in the fashion similar to their element, and have unique features to each. For instance, when a student steps into the Schwarzweiss dorm, they receive a temporary buff that allows them to see more clearly at night while they are in the dorm.
Ikkuma
Passionate and charismatic, the Ikkuma house is home to the school's students with an affinity for fire based magics. The house's commons room is decorated in vibrant maroon and gold colors, with a large fireplace located on the far wall. The temperature inside of the dorm is always slightly above the rest of the academy, but the entire area is under a spell that makes it so anyone entering the dorm has a higher tolerance for heat. The house emblem displays a mighty chimera on the main crest.
Azur
Home to the water and ice mages, Azur prides itself on being the calm and collected house, having colors of sea green and blue. The commons area is lined with various aquariums filled with exotic fish donated to the school throughout the decades. The floor even has a spell placed on it that makes it seem as if the students are walking on top of a plane of glass directly on top of an ocean. The enhancement that comes with his house is the ability to walk on slippery surfaces with much more traction to avoid falling while in the house. The house emblem is a large whale, symbolizing strength and wisdom.
Zemletreus
Adorned with brown and steel, Zemletreus houses the strong and determined earth mages. All long the walls, various precious gemstones are displayed in glass cases that are protected with magic barriers. The house elected to provide it's students with it's own private training area, complete with weight training and enhancements to reduce time needed to recover. Though they frequently have to re-attach the punching bags.
Zhenfeng
Fast and precise, the Zhenfeng house is the residence for the academy's wind and lightening users. The house colors are a mixture of green and silver, with a spell cast upon the roof that give the impression of a clear blue sky for a ceiling. The spell cast upon this house lets students glide effortlessly around, as if they were skating upon a cloud.
Schwarzweiss
The final house, Schwarzweiss is home to the academy's light and darkness users. It is widely regarded as one of the most powerful houses in terms of magic ability, and is decorated with a mixture of purple and gold colors. The commons area is lit by beautiful bronze lights by day, and by cool black lights by night. During the night, students are able to see in the dark much easier due to a spell cast upon the house.
Faculty
Headmistress - Cynthia Weiss
Despite her youthful appearance, Cynthia has been headmistress of Gateway for close to 50 years. Her ability to ward off aging stems from her vampire heritage, a creature that she became at the age of 30 after a battle with a strong vampire mage. Thankfully, Cynthia used her new-found vampiric powers to strengthen her already impressive mastery over the magical arts. Today, she is widely regarded as one of the most powerful mages alive, with a summon that makes even the most hardened warriors shake with fear.
Cynthia is strict but fair when it comes to dealing with students at the school, but tries to always be approachable whenever problems arise.
She spends most of her days in her office, filing paperwork and wishing rain would block out the sun for a bit.
Ikkuma House Leader - Nicolas Mathis
Initially an assassin, Nicolas turned away from his profession when he discovered he had a profound talent for casting fire magic. After training under the guidance a clan of fire mages, Nicolas his combined talents of assassination and destruction magic to become a lethal force among the magic community. His talents were soon recognized by the Gateway staff, and he was hired to lead the Ikkuma house.
He is an exceptionally smooth talker, especially among the women staffers. His leadership style entails careful prodding of his weaker students, while becoming friendly with his top achievers. His main goal is to defeat the other houses at the yearly Summoner Games.
Azur House Leader - Carol Anderson
Intelligent and graceful, Carol Anderson comes from a long line of powerful water mages. She started out as the school's librarian, having a passion for learning new aspects of the magical world and spreading that knowledge to her students. Eventually, her talents for casting water magic were discovered, and she was offered to take the house leader position to help further her career. To this day, she is considered the most approachable of the five house leaders.
She is a kind individual, willing to help students out with personal problems if they appear to be struggling. Carol frequently visits the library to check out more books, which she can be seen reading in her office. While she respects her other house leaders, she take particular interest in her philosophical debates with Tony, and what role physical strength has among magic users.
Zemletreus House Leader - Tony Knox
Originally a street punk from Brooklyn, New York, Tony Knox managed to escape his life of crime when on one street fight, he managed to punch his opponent through a concrete wall. It was after this point that he discovered he had magical powers, and was sent away to Gateway to develop his powers. During his time, he fought with many of his fellow students, but slowly learned to have respect for non-physical magic users. After his graduation and competing at various fighting arenas, he was offered a job at the school.
Tony runs his house like a sports team, always pushing his students to train harder and longer than yesterday. He has a reputation among the school for being the most strict with his Summoner Games sports teams, insisting that they must put in more effort in order to defeat the other houses. He also has a small rivalry with Carol Anderson, wanting to prove that hard work and training can stand up to intelligence and an advantageous element.
Zhenfeng House Leader - Amelia Stark
The only non-human house leader, Amelia is a kitsune with a total of 9 tails. She normally keeps these tails under a spell that makes them disappear, but during battle, each tail is able to independently cast spells on their own. She was raised in a school in China for 'special' people such as herself, and learned that her kind of kitsune are quite rare to come by, and she in particular had a strong magical potential. Due to this, she elected to study at Gateway, and graduated with flying colors. She was soon offered a leadership position at the academy for her mastery of wind powers.
Amelia is a quiet individual, preferring to watch people rather than have long conversations. She does, however, have a mischievous side that regularly crops up to play lighthearted jokes upon her students or coworkers. So if 50 Shades of Grey slips into Carol's read pile, or Tony finds his punching bag has been filled with glitter, everyone knows who did it...most of the time anyway.
Schwarzweiss House Leader - James McMaster
A lifelong researcher, James prides himself as an academic who graduated from Gateway when he was a young adult, then proceeded to get three separate science degrees in biology, chemistry and physics from Stanford. Using his knowledge of the sciences, he takes extraordinary magical phenomena, and boils down their effects to their most fundamental levels in order to analyse them. He hopes to be able to combine traditional sciences with magical theory to create a deeper understanding of both.
As a house leader, he pushes his students to excel in academic as much as possible. His closest friend on the faculty is Amelia Stark, and enjoys occasionally helping out with her pranks, much to the dismay of some of the other staff.
Ellen Cain - Magical Object Creation (HH)
A young teacher with a head full of facts and body full of energy, Ellen is a newcomer to the faculty. A metal summoner, she uses her powers to improve her craft as a forger of magical artifacts. Her main job is teaching students how to create their own magical objects, although she also makes and repairs the weapons that the students wield. She takes to these tasks and any others with enthusiasm and competence. Just don't let her near alcohol.
Iris Kurome - Magic History/Biology
Aside from her day job at the HWIC, Iris is one of the oldest staff members at Gateway, having been a teacher for decades before even the current headmaster. It's rumored that Iris is such a talented history teacher because she's perhaps lived long enough to have experienced some of the events first hand.
Iris's teaching style is a mixture of whimsical cheerfulness and deadpan seriousness, often displaying the same expression for both. Students attending her class never know what Iris has planned for the next day, which could range from a standard lecture, to inspecting the inside of an ancient hydra's skull when talking about mythical beasts.
Iris is very friendly with the entire staff, and is amused by Amelia's antics. She is always on the lookout for exceptional students, ones that could rival her own reputation one day. So far, none have crossed her mind.
Marion Barber- Healing and repair (JLG)
A recent addition to the faculty from Scotland, Marion is not a summoner, instead being a specialist on healing and repair magic. Calm and professional, she's also clearly dominant, highly capable of handling excitable teens, even if she lacks their raw power outputs. For the most part a confidant woman, she does have some worries about leaving her son Malcolm in London to attend KG, although she'll never show it.
