Someone once said, that there's an Island full of rare creatures, where their eggs are free for the taking. That there are living creatures made out of candy and gingerbread who live in the North Pole! The world is truly in a Gourmet Age, an age of seeking yet unknown tastes!
China, 1661 AD
A certain day, tragedy occured at the imperial palace, the prominent figures whispered around the castle.
"This is bad isn't it? Emperor Sunzhi passed away a few days ago and the young Emperor hasn't eaten one bit"- A lady whispered to her friend as she looked at the closed throne room
"Yes, but can you blame the boy? he's only seven years old, and tradition states the Emperor must eat alone"
A tall man in blue robes walked past the women and stopped right as he gave his back to them
"Women should stay quiet on matters that don't concern them! out of my sight, before I get you both executed!"
Regent Oboi was the man who was bestowed with the Emperor's authority during this time, and he was ruthless, in the same week he came to power, he got all of his political rivals executed, and people naturally thought he wanted to seize the throne for himself.
As the man walked on the hallways of the castle, his personal assistant quickly came to his side.
"Regent Oboi, I am afraid the people already noticed the young Emperor's lack of appetite...there's talk on the street, with the recent death of the former emperor and the execution of minister Xin, people are already pointing fingers at you, and uh, the Mother of the Emperor seems to have forbidden the royal chefs to prepare any more meals for the child, it seems she has already hired someone else"
"That wench, perhaps I moved too hastily with my plan. No worries, we will bring that cook to our side in time"
The food Shinto had been working diligently and earned a name for herself, Due to her being a nomad cook, her talents were well known from Yunan to Shandong. Knowing this, the Imperial guard managed to track down Osechi, who brought her back to the palace in no time. Osechi was first brought to Oboi, who inspected her from head to toe
"So, you mean to tell me this woman in rags is supposed to be cooking for our Emperor? A filthy foreigner! Emperor Sunzhi must be rolling on his grave"- The man examined Osechi's teeth and much to his surprise, they were impeccable, unnaturaly so, especially for this time period.
"Hmph, very well, let's give her a shot. You can understand what I say, can't you?"
Osechi Nodded her head. even someone like her would learn the language after being around for a while.
"I want you to prepare tonight's meal for the Young Emperor, know that if your highness decides not to eat your food you will be sent directly to the dungeons! and by my command, the royal chefs will take place again"
Osechi was cleaned and given new clothes before she was allowed to cook. Having some hours left, Osechi made snacks for herself.
"Nai Wong Bao, Nai Wong Bao, Nai Wong Bao"-Osechi sang as she made the steamed custard buns, at least two to three times the size of a regular Nai Wong Bao. She rushed out of the kitchen into the Imperial Garden and set her buns aside. As she went for the first bite, she noticed a kid in yellow clothes holding the hands of his mother. The child caught a glimpse of Osechi and was mesmerized by her looks. Immediately freeing himself from his mom's grip, The young Emperor ran towards Osechi:
"Your skin is so pale! who are you?!"-The child asked as she saw Osechi reach for a Custard bun
"I'pmh, Ophsecpi! Wmho ar Youph!?"-She said with a mouth full.
The kid was once again confused, no one had ever addressed him with a mouthful, and just what were those things?! Buns as large as a baby's head.
"They must be really good if you can't stop eating while you are speaking"-The kid replied, stomach slightly growling from not having eaten anything in a couple days. Osechi took yet another Nai Wong Bao and handed it over to the kid.
"For me?"-He asked curiously, to which Osechi nodded, stuffing yet another one on her face.
At this point, the mother had quickly went after the kid, but stopped herself as soon as she saw the kid reach for food
The kids eyes widened as he took the first bite. It was quite clearly a custard bun, but none like he had ever tried before! The texture! the sweetness! It was by far the best mouthful he's ever had in his short life! despite the large size of it, the kid munched at it again and again. Eventually, Osechi ran out of buns, and the kid had finished his.
"...Say, why were they so big?!"
"The bigger the better! don't you think?!"-The Shinto Replied. With this mantra on his head, Emperor Kangxhi would end up expanding the Chinese empire to new heights, annexing Taiwan and defeating both the Mongols and the Russians in battle.
