Ariana slouched on an ancient plastic chair, more surface scratched than smooth, eyes not focused on whatever was running on the TV across the room. She could barely hear Huntsman and Becky's laughter, even though they sat right beside her, and when they left she didn't feel their absence. Eve watched her from her desk. She looked grey and thin, the consequence of having a body that responded to her mental state. "Malcolm. Get me the box in my room marked "House of Eternity"." She snapped, sending the young man scurrying.
He was back within a minute with what she demanded. The box was crammed full of things she had picked up from the place Ariana had stayed at least a year. There was almost nothing in the way of personal effects, but what there was, Ariana had shown no interest in taking back. Some of it made Eve stew every time she looked at it. She had been tempted to throw a framed picture of Warden in the garbage every time she looked at it. But the rest she couldn't let go. A wallet, packed with fake IDs and decorated with roaring Ceratosauruses. A phone, coverless and with a cracked screen. And a gem that shimmered and shone with the color of water. No, not the color of water. The colors. It seemed to change every time she looked. Sometimes it was the gem blue of a shallow sea in the tropics, sometimes the near clear of bottled water, and rarely, it was the nearly black tone of the midnight ocean.
Eve gently took the stone and the phone and turned the latter on. It barely worked, damaged at some point Ariana couldn't identify and possibly sabotaged by Warden. That wasn't enough to stop Eve. She wasn't all hardware after all. Her scalp peeled away and she plugged the skull into a slot behind her ear. Again she interfaced with it through the Flipside phone in her own brain. It was Goodknight, so it wasn't entirely compatible, but what she wanted was simple. Contacts was empty, but Ariana had hidden her preferred numbers on a note-taking app. She tapped the first number into her own phone. "Hello? Do you know an Ariana Harper?" A couple of calls later, a green-haired girl walked into the Wild Hunt offices. She didn't particularly stand out, besides the floppy, train-conductor style hat on her head. She stopped for a second before her head snapped to Ariana. "Hi!" She hopped into the seat next to her, wincing at the quality. "I'm Cosmina! We met at my mom's Christmas party a few years ago." She offered her hand and Ariana took it, face furrowed in confusion. "I... who?" Ariana tilted her head. "Aw, you don't remember... oh well, I bet you'll remember everybody else." Cosmina closed her eyes and smiled. "Oh, they're outside now! You got a swimsuit?"

Loveline was in the living room of the Cromwell residence, talking to someone on her phone. When the conversation ended, she looked at her phone.
"Who was that?" Arthur asked while typing something on his laptop.
"Eve," Love answered. "It's about Ariana."
Arthur put his laptop to the side, leaned in and interlocked his fingers. "Did something happen to her? Is she okay? Did 'he' show up?"
"She's fine. Okay, not fine fine, but she isn't hurt. She's still depressed, actually. Eve thought she could maybe call some of Ariana's friends together to see if they can cheer her up. But no, that doesn't include you."
"She knows us visiting didn't help much before, right?"
"I don't know, Arty. She's probably at the end of her rope. We have to try again! And again! I'm sure we'll get through sooner or later." Loveline paused. "Do you have any good news for her? Do you have clues about Warden?"
"Love, I don't think mentioning him is going to help much... Not that you have much to say. Of course, I didn't give my contacts much of a lead anyway. 'He's usually a guy but could be a girl. He's tall with black hair unless he isn't.' Shapeshifters are hard to track unless you have a good starting point, and Warden was always too careful. We might never find him, you know."
"Maybe it's better that way." Loveline sighed. "I'll go get ready. I don't know when I'll be back."
"Just call if you're staying past eleven."
Sometime later, Loveline entered the Wild Hunt offices, dressed comfortably, but ready for anything with faded jeans, a red plaid shirt, and a denim jacket. She took a deep breath and looked for Ariana. Finding her didn't take long, despite Ariana's best attempts at being a statue.
"Ariana! Hi!" Love jumped in to hug her, even if the chair made the hug incredibly awkward. "How are you feeling?"
It was only a second later that she noticed Cosmina. "Oh, Cosmina! You're here, too! Are Haruko and Katie here too?

Walking in after Cosmina, Haruko stood next to the bed and gave Ariana a polite wave. She wore a dark blue t-shirt over a white layered skirt, with a pair of black tennis shoes on her feet. "Hello, Ariana!" Haruko began, smiling. "And hello to you as well, Loveline." Haruko gave Loveline a wave as well. "Hope you've been doing well living with Eve, Ariana. I bet it gets more exciting here than you're used to." Haruko let out a small chuckle, trying to lighten the mood. Several seconds later, thumping could be heard coming from the hallway, where a blond girl leaped through the doorway, did a backflip, and landed on top of a nearby chair. The girl proudly looked down at the group.
"Hey, Ariana! It's been a while!" Elyssa stated. She wore her usual attire; brown vest over a black shirt, a pair of brown shorts, and a pair of knee-high black boots on her feet. She adjusted her signature brown hat as she hopped up and sat in the chair she landed on. "So how have you been? Haven't seen you since that time we met up and did that Ruin with all the spiders." Elyssa confidently leaned back in the chair and looked at Loveline. "Kate was busy with soccer camp, so we just brought Cosmina along. But that is besides the point!" Elyssa turned back to Ariana, awaiting her response.

Ariana barely budged when hugged. "I'm good." She robotically responded. After a second, she nudged Loveline to be released. "Hello." The word fell from her mouth with a flat thud. She only stirred when Elyssa jumped into the room. "...Elyssa?" She blinked. "Oh, so you didn't lose your memories?" Eve couldn't stop a grin from overflowing its normal human boundaries. Ariana frowned when she looked up at her. She was exactly like she remembered, all golden brilliance and overflowing charisma. "What's going on?" She asked.
"You're going out with your friends while Haruko and I discuss this nice school Cosmina and Kate are going to." Eve scooped Ariana out of her seat. "But-" "Butts are booty, and that's what you're going digging for. Get going, kid." Eve practically tossed her to the door and she stumbled out, Cosmina immediately beside her. "If you don't have a swimsuit, I'll just make you one in the Ruin. Everybody ready?" Cosmina waved to everybody else, holding the arm of a confused Ariana, no longer limp.

Loveline let go of Ariana and greeted Haruko when she saw her. Then someone Loveline never met before showed up. A blond girl with a sense of theatrics and a weird hat. Having lived with Arthur for several years now, Loveline could appreciate her grandiose entrance. Aside from that though, her first impressions of the newcomer, Elyssa as Ariana called her, didn't leave her with a positive impression. Who was she to make Ariana snap out of her funk when Loveline couldn't even make her twitch after months of trying? Elyssa merely showed up and Ariana was already more animated.
Her jealousy didn't show when said "Hi" to Elyssa. She joined Cosmina and Ariana at the door. "Ready!" she exclaimed.

Quickly following the group as they left the room, Elyssa skidded to a stop near the group. "Of course you know I'm ready!" She said in response to Cosmina's question, looking around at the group. The strange reaction of Loveline made Elyssa frown slightly, extending her hand out toward the illusionist. "Hello to you as well! I'm sure you heard my name, but I'm Elyssa. What's your name?" She asked, giving a smile. The curt greeting made Elyssa think there was some animosity there that should be worked out before they went on the mission.
Turning to Ariana for a second, Elyssa gave a thumbs-up in her direction, trying to keep Ariana interested in going with them while she talked with Loveline.

"Wait, stop. What's going on? A Ruin? Swimsuits?" Ariana's bafflement was only growing with everybody dancing around talking to each other. "You know what, you deserve to know what we're doing. Elyssa, could you tell Ariana where we're going while I get some measurements?" Cosmina waved to the blond explorer. "Measurements?" Ariana asked as Cosmina walked around Ariana, moving her head like a weird bird and lifting Ariana's arms from time to time. "And done! Wow, I'm jealous. You've got a great body." Cosmina jotted down notes on a pad she produced from nowhere. "I do?" Ariana looked down at herself. "Trust me, the boys will love you when you go to school." "Ew." Ariana wrinkled her nose. "Hey, don't knock 'em till you try 'em." Cosmina's pen moved at a rate that made Ariana dizzy trying to follow, sketching what appeared to be clothing designs.

"I'm Loveline," she told Elyssa. "Cromwell. A pleasure to meet you," she added, smiling back. Jealousy didn't mean she couldn't act nice.
"Don't worry, I'm sure girls will also love you." Loveline joked about Ariana's disgusted reaction. "Come on, let's go. Elyssa can talk about it on the way." Loveline herself didn't know where exactly they would be going. All she was told was to be ready for a ruin and bring a swimsuit, which she was wearing under her clothes for convenience.

With the pleasantries out of the way, Elyssa stood at attention. "Right! let me explain what is going on." Adjusting her cap, Elyssa continued. "I found us a nice Ruin out in the pacific. It involves a lot of swimming, so that's why I brought along this little gremlin to help out!" She proclaimed, motioning toward Cosmina. The group quickly walked their way toward the nearby teleportation station, masked as a simple convenience store with a small side door that led into the pocket dimension where the teleportation consoles sat. Each location had a plaque above it, detailing the exit point and the cost to teleport there.
"Right this way! I chartered one of the custom teleporters to take us to this little island in the middle of nowhere. And I'm not joking when I say island. This thing is only about 10 meters across. Crazy, right?!" She explained, showing the group to a row along the back with a plaque above reading "Custom Destination" and the accompanying station number. Each station was a little larger than a phone booth, Elyssa leaping first into the box. Soon, everyone crowded inside as Elyssa drew a small golden piece of paper from her pocket. Instantly, the group would see a flash of white light and find themselves staring out upon a vast ocean, the sand beneath their feet. Elyssa was correct about the size of the tiny island, only about 10 meters across and 6 meters long.
"Here we are!" Elyssa exclaimed, taking out a small coin from her pocket and holding it up toward the sun. The ground soon began to rumble, and a sandstone gateway began to rise out of the ground. Instead of doors, the middle of the gateway was two thin streams of water, giving the impression of a waterfall that ran into what seemed like the sand beneath their feet, disappearing altogether. Elyssa then unbuttoned her shorts and pulled them down, revealing the black swimsuit she had on beneath. She then removed her shirt and placed her hat back on her head. "Well, just walk through the little waterfall here! Right this way!" She stated, taking one long stride through the waterfall and disappearing into the area behind it.
Behind the waterfall, the group would see a larger sandstone cavern, with a circular platform in the center surrounded by dark blue water that was difficult to see beneath. The walls were covered in various statues of oceanic creatures; large crabs, sea serpents, various squid-like monsters, strange mermaid statues, and a massive monster that looked like a toad with a gigantic throat sac. Elyssa waved at the others to join her at the platform, now having a brown bag slung over her shoulder.

"Huh?" Was Ariana's only response to Loveline saying that girls would like her. Cosmina pushed her along before she could question or protest further. She found herself uncomfortably crowded into the teleportation station, barely enough room for all the girls crammed into it. Ariana found herself crammed between Loveline and Elyssa, squirming uncomfortably. The moment they teleported, she took the opportunity to get some space. She found there wasn't much space to get when she met the shore within a couple of steps.
A few seabirds took off at her approach, leaving her facing nothing but crashing waves. The emptiness pulled at her. She could only see that ocean around her. A dim rumble drew her attention away, and her eyes widened when the gateway pushed its way out of the ground. She had only seen one ruin in her life. It seemed like an eternity ago, before she even went back in time, but it stood out vividly. Elyssa's bravery, the spiders, the spear-wielding Anna. She was again distracted when Elyssa began stripping. "Wh-what are you doing!?" To her horror, Cosmina also stripped down to a one piece swimsuit, decorated with light green and blue strikes and marked with odd oval bumps all over in regular rows.
"You have one, right?" Cosmina asked. "I don't want... I haven't..." She wavered before waterfall. She didn't bring a swimsuit and she certainly wasn't changing into one Cosmina made in front of everybody! She pondered going through this all in wet clothes, but that was hardly better. It was only patting her pockets to see if anything she had couldn't go in the water that she realized her solution. She pulled a little sapphire stone from her pocket. The waves of the ocean seemed to peak higher, excited by the appearance of this rock of the water. Ariana became a sculpture of ice.
In a mere second, it grew and changed and away the ice shattered, leaving Ariana a foot taller and nearly adult-looking. She still hesitated to take off the sailor-striped dress that covered the one-piece swimsuit she wore, but she did it without too much dithering. "Love, can you use your powers and still have a swimsuit?" She was pretty sure none of the other Gem Girls wore what she did under their skirts.

Loveline rarely used the teleportation stations Elyssa ushered them into. There were many more practical ways to travel and a Miyata should know them! And where did they end up? A tiny island! There were no ruins there, this Elyssa was just full of it. Why would Ariana like her so much if she couldn't even take them where she was supposed to! Then Elyssa produced a coin and the land morphed. Now Loveline couldn't even be grumpy about Elyssa's failure which was only more annoying.
While she stewed, the others started taking off their clothes so Loveline joined them. Her swimsuit was a red bikini with a white spiked pattern on the bottom part, while her top had petal-patterned lace hanging off of it. While she changed, Ariana asked her about her swimsuit.
"I don't think it'll stick around in my gem form if that's what you mean. But our clothes dry off between transformations anyway, right? So even if I transform, it'll all be okay after I turn back." Love noticed Elyssa putting her hat back on. "Hey, your hat will get wet. You should leave that behind, too."
Love folded her clothes and put them in a pile with the rest. Hopefully, no one will come here and end up stealing them. She then joined the rest on the other side of the waterfall. The ruin might have been bigger than it seemed at first sight. At least the decor suited the theme of this adventure.
"Any ideas what creatures we'll run into, Elyssa?" Love asked sarcastically.

Elyssa slowed to a stop when Loveline called after her about her hat, turning to address the newcomer to the team. "Sorry, but this hat is going to stay on my head whenever I am in a Ruin. But don't worry, it's not going to get wet. Check this out." She grinned, reaching into the brown bag and pulling out 4 tiny plastic earpieces with a microphone extending outwards. Each of them was color coded; yellow, green, blue and red. Elyssa handed the blue one to Ariana, green to Cosmina, and red to Loveline, fixing the yellow one into her right ear. "These are little communicators that allow us to talk while underwater! Cool, huh? And it gets even better." Tapping the small button on the side of the communicator, a clear bubble ballooned out of the device and covered Elyssa's head in a large bubble. "This creates a small pocket of air for us! Don't worry about running out of oxygen, it filters the air by itself!" Grinning, Elyssa pressed the button again to make the bubble pop.
Looking at Loveline once more when she asked about the creatures, Elyssa stood proudly and motioned toward the water. "All kinds of water creatures! Sea serpents, pufferfish, and a bunch of hidden world fish! Ever seen a weeping rockfish? Or the dreaded nightshade spearfish? Maybe we could even encounter a dunkleosteus!" Elyssa boasted, posing at the edge of the water. She lowered her right eyebrow slightly when she noticed Loveline and Cosmina didn't have their stuff with them. "By the way...you two could give me your clothes, you know? My back is watertight!" She said, opening it up and pulling out her own shirt and shorts. Regardless if they eventually gave her the items or not to hold onto, Elyssa turned to face the water before her. "Is everyone ready?! 3...2...1...dive!" Leaping into the air, Elyssa pressed the button to make the bubble appear around her head, letting her dive into the water and begin to swim through a stone archway before them. The water was clear; the group able to see far ahead of themselves. Several colorful white and yellow striped fish swam by them, Elyssa reaching out to poke one of them as it swam by.
"Is everyone alright back there? Able to swim?" She asked, turning back to see if anyone needed help.

"Sea serpents!?" Ariana's eyes lit up for a second before she frowned again. "Hm. I'll hit any that attack us." She flexed her fingers. She felt magic coursing through her. It had been so long. Beside her, Cosmina tossed her clothes to Elyssa. "Great, let's go already!" She hesitated only a moment on the lip of the platform before diving for the water. Ariana didn't hesitate at all, following with a messy plunge into the salty water. Cosmina dove without a bubble but with some difficulty. She didn't seem like an amazing swimmer. Different was Ariana. She moved like she was born for the water, zipping past Elyssa to chase the fish, only to find that they actually were born for the water. "Where are the sea serpents?" She asked.

"Thanks." Love took the earpiece and put it in. She made a bubble and took a breath. It certainly felt natural on the surface. Elyssa took the opportunity to explain that they'd be running into the creatures on the walls like a regular captain obvious! Although the rockfish and spearfish she mentioned sounded cool. She also offered to hold the crew's clothes in her backpack. Resisting an urge to tell her no on principle, Loveline gave Elyssa her clothes. Hopefully, her backpack straps wouldn't get broken while they were exploring.
The team dove into the blue depths, through stone remnants of whatever civilization produced this ruin. Love's feet and hands elongated slightly, growing webbed film between her fingers and toes to help with the swimming. She was grateful for the bubble Elyssa provided because she never bothered learning how to make working gills.
"If you need help, you can hold on to me. But not too tight!" She told Cosmina who didn't seem to have much experience actually swimming.
"Where are the sea serpents?" Ariana asked.
"Right behind you!" Love pointed with a terrified expression at a giant serpent that looked very much like the stone statues above, only bigger and covered in dark scales instead of stone. The serpent opened its massive jaw and came at Ariana before exploding into a thousand little fishies swimming in random directions.
"Psyche!" The fish disappeared as suddenly as the serpent appeared.

"The sea serpents are a little farther u-" Elyssa's voice stopped when Loveline called out a sea serpent behind them, something that should have been impossible upon Elyssa's initial scouting run. Before she was able to turn and fire a spear-tipped grappling hook at it, Loveline dispelled her illusion into thousands of random fish. "Pahahahahaha! So that's your powers, huh? Illusion magic? I like your sense of humor, Loveline." Elyssa said as she laughed, turning back to the archway and swimming.
"But as I was saying...sea serpents live a little ways into the cave, so we won't see them for a bit. But there are cool little harmless fish around if you look. See, that's a Spotted Monkeyfish!" Elyssa pointed toward a small school of brown fish with strange tube-like fins located at the back, near their rear fins. Their bodies were covered in white dots, and their faces were squashed in like a pug's, two bulbous eyes scanning the ocean for food. Swimming past the schools of strange fish, Elyssa and the group came to a massive circular underwater cavern with the an impressively tall column of water reaching up to the surface, and 3 distinct archways surrounding the group, with a seemingly endless black abyss below.
The leftmost archway was covered in a crystalline rock, reflecting the light that passed through the top of the tower of water. The one next to it was made up of simple sandstone, though had the same picture of a large creature with a throat-sac they had seen in the main room, the archway decorated to look like a creature's mouth. The rightmost archway was also plain, but had a bright beam of light coming through it, as if the sun right right past the archway. Elyssa turned back to address the group.
"So here is how the Ruin works!" She declared. "There is something at the end of each of these archways, up there, and down there." Elyssa pointed up toward the top of the cavern, and down to the abyss. "We get all 5 items, come back to this main room, and..." Elyssa flashed a smile. "We will see, won't we?" She winked at the others, holding her hands behind her head. "So! Which would you all like to go after first? Crystal arch, scary arch, bright arch, top of the Ruin, or the abyss?" She asked, glancing at the directions she was addressing.

"Right behind-" "Ah!" Ariana's question was stopped by Cosmina flailing in the water, trying to hide behind her much bigger friend. Ariana's eyes widened, but in the same moment, her lips turned up in a grin. She pulled back her fist, but the sea serpent vanished long before getting within punching range. A fake fish swam right through her, dissipating into bubbles on the other side. She emptily blinked a few times before grinning at Loveline. "Real cute. But I still gotta do this for messing with me!" She snapped her fingers and the water around Loveline dropped to just below freezing for fresh water. Of course, this was salty, so she'd not be a cube, but it would give her a nice nip.
Cosmina gave her a thumbs up and swam on, grin broad. They hovered in the center of the water column, looking every which way. Cosmina cast her sonar to the depths below. She shrugged after a few seconds. Apparently nothing returned. Ariana snapped out of staring at the monkeyfish after minute to point at the shining arch. "That one looks okay." She mumbled.

Loveline laughed at Ariana's reaction. Elyssa joined in, too, and even complimented Love. Loveline then realized disliking this girl wasn't going to be easy. She's too nice! Maybe there was a reason Ariana responded to her the way she did... Loveline was snapped out of her thoughts by a sudden freezing sensation.
"Eek!" she squeed. "I'm sorry! It won't happen ever again!" She swam away to get away from the cold water and ended up laughing again. "Until next time, that is!"
Elyssa then asked them where they'd like to go next. Cosmina seemed to want to check out the abyss, while Ariana wanted the bright arch. "I agree with Ariana. If it's well lit it'll be easier to explore, so it's probably a good warmup section!"

Elyssa laughed further when Ariana lowered the water temperature around Loveline, clutching her stomach as she laughed. "Ahahahahaha! Oh man, you guys are great. It's good to have you back, Ariana!" Elyssa called over to the magical girl of the group. She then turned her attention to the group, glancing toward the shining arch. "Sounds good to me! Let's head out!" Grinning at the group once more, Elyssa began to swim toward the shining arch. The bright light got brighter as the group approached, Elyssa covering her eyes with her arm and swimming with the other to stay on course. Once they passed the threshold though, they would then find themselves toppling onto a simple dirt semicircle platform, Elyssa rolling away from the entrance before the others landed on her. The room was home to an overwhelmingly large wall of white ice that extended several meters into the air, linking up with the ceiling. Two black metallic poles extended out of the ground, both holding a clear glass-like orb that shone a warm yellow light. The ice didn't seem to emit any particularly song aura of cold, almost like it was glass. In front of the platform was a level sheet of the ice, just below it being the vague image of still light blue water. Front viewSide viewOnce everyone had entered the area, Elyssa turned to address them. "Everyone comfortable? Good! Here's what we have to do!" She pointed toward the two staffs at the edge of the platform. "We need to recover an item somewhere inside this room. Those staffs melt ice in a circular area around them. So we can take those staffs and start combing through this room...or..." Elyssa looked down at the ice below their feet. "...melt our way to that water below, and investigate the room from below. Though be careful." Elyssa flashed the group a grin. "There might be something in the water, or there might not. What do you guys want to do?" She asked, leaning against the doorway. "Oh, and careful touching those staffs. They start the challenge. Since..." She pointed to a strange white orb attached to the ceiling directly above the arch. "...those aren't the only things that are going to start melting ice in this room." She stated. How were these three going to attack this room? It wouldn't be fun to constantly guide the group!

"Back...?" Ariana mused on what Elyssa said. It was only dawning now. She wasn't the only one hurting in the months after the disaster. Ever sad look Eve gave her when she didn't eat or burst into tears out of nowhere hit her at once. Her lip wobbled. "Uh. Go on for a second, okay?" She waved the others past. "You sure, Ariana? We can woah!" Cosmina stopped, but was pushed away by a current that came out of nowhere. Ariana was alone for a second. She dropped her bubble to pat her cheeks, chilling the water to wave it over her face. "Alright. Alright, keep it together." Tears leaked, and before she knew it she was sobbing.
It was a good minute before, looking like Rudolph if his eyes were stung by bees, she stepped through. "I'm sorry!" She hugged Loveline tight, probably a good deal too tight. "I've been so wrapped up in my head I've been completely ignoring everything you did and... I was just so miserable!" It was another minute before she released her and was able to listen to Elyssa. "So the... wha?" She was going a little crosseyed from all the information being thrown at her. "So... I say we swim! I can swim pretty good!" Cosmina was clicking to no result. "Well I can't use sonar. Way too thick and solid. I think I have to agree with Ariana." She shrugged.

Loveline's ribs bent like rubber under Ariana's superhuman hug. Love returned the hug, glad Ariana was finally letting her emotions out in such a heartfelt apology.
"...I understand," she said in the end. She kind of enjoyed the hug, although she was also glad when she could return her ribs back to their proper firmness when Ariana let go.
After listening to Elyssa's explanation, Ariana suggested they go into the water under the ice and Cosmina agreed. "There are two rods though. We could pair up and have one pair look under the ice while the other searches up here. Ariana's a good swimmer, and I don't mind being up here. And..." Loveline wasn't sure if she'd rather be here with Elyssa or let Elyssa spend more time getting chummy with Ariana, and she didn't have enough time to weigh all the pros and cons. "...Cosmina and Elyssa can figure out which one would rather be where! Do we know what item we're looking for?"
