Appearance:
Like any dwarf, Onyx is extremely short and stocky. His small body is packed with incredible muscle, all contained with pale skin, much of it burnt. An intricately braided white beard and long hair cover most of his face, with red sunglasses covering his blue eyes so that all that shows is a bulbous nose. He is surprisingly young looking when his face is actually exposed, being the dwarven equivalent of around 30. He tends to wear suits and other nice clothing. The ring that transforms him is patterned like a golden serpent.
In his draconic form, Onyx remains much the same in body shape and size as his regular form. His body becomes entirely coated in brown-grey scales and plates. His mouth becomes a gaping thing of fangs, with beady eyes above it. His head elongates and grows a tough shield that guards his neck. His feet lose toes to become webbed and taloned, and spikes jut from his forehead, knuckles, and shoulders.
History:
Family is important when you’re a Scandinavian dwarf. Knowing what family a dwarf belongs to will tell you their general standing and what treasure they may have inherited. The Drakenskal family is one well-known since ancient times, immortalized by their possession of the ring Andvaranaut, claimed by the founding member of the family, a second son of a minor family. Since then, the family has managed to keep hold of the cursed ring, against trials from inside and out. Some fell to the ring’s influence, but others have remained uncorrupted their entire lives and passed on peacefully.
Onyx’s father unfortunately hewed closer to the former, over the centuries becoming a full-fledged dragon as he never removed the ring, burning Hidden World lands to increase his hoard. Some of Onyx’s siblings, especially his eldest brother, became impatient for their heritage, while others simply wished to stop his rampages. Infighting tore the family apart, and many died even before the survivors met in their father’s hall. In a mighty battle, Onyx claimed the ring and destroyed his older brother and father, ending their corruption. Onyx, disgusted as he was with what it had brought, could not bring himself to discard the treasure he now rightfully owned and took his seat as the young head of the Drakenskal family.
Personality:
Onyx, like many dwarves, loves treasure. He fiercely defends the hoard of his family and adds to it as much as he can. Money is only a part of this. Besides valuable weapons and jewelry, he has added action figures and vintage comics. He is not all greed, however. He has seen firsthand what that does to somebody and has a special sort of sympathy mixed with disdain for people who have let their desires ruin them. After seeing the destruction his father managed to sow as a dragon, he sought to turn his skills to preventing such things in the future in hunting great beasts and the evils of the world.
Relationships:
Callis Nomene- This knight of the JWAB came to Onyx seeking weapons after losing his ability to create his own swords. His humility and good nature impressed Onyx, but his insistence on throwing himself into danger drove the dwarf insane. Overall, he found himself liking the drifter, even if he hopes he never meets him again
Akane Musashi- Unlike Callis, the Musashi heir mostly just annoyed Onyx. He sees her as spoiled and pushy, even insulting at times. The two never quite warmed up to each other, but Onyx eventually managed a fragile, grudging respect for her skills.
Gapjärn- The vicious dragon who guarded the weapons Onyx sought for Callis turned out to be little more than a fantasy fangirl attempting to relive the battles of the past. Even so, her strength is what you would expect from a dragon, and Onyx requested her to be his training partner to get himself back into shape. As silly as she may be, Onyx knows to respect a dragon.
Elatha Van Dercycle- So, so stupid. Strong, loyal, kind. But stupid.
Leor- Also stupid. Doesn't seem to understand that you can't avoid violence at all times. Too naive to survive.
Lom Hobsdraught
Dwarven society is heavily stratified, both in the literal sense and a figurative one. In Välstånd, the upper classes live in the peaks of their mountains, leaving the majority of the mountain base as a sort of city-state where the vast majority of the populace lives. Below the mountains live the outcasts, descendants of bandits, exiles and fled debtors, eeking out survival among monsters of the deep, from grecks to greysends to goblins. While they usually live in competition, one tribe of dwarves integrated fully with a clan of goblins, creating a mixed clan with multiple mixed-blood members, often known as “blue dwarves” for their periwinkle skin tones.
These dwarf-goblin hybrids have a variety of odd features besides their cyan skins. They are as tall as dwarves and generally shaped more like them, but their bone structures are closer to a frail goblin. This leaves them significantly weaker than the average dwarf. To make up for this, they combine a dwarf’s natural taste for engineering with a goblin’s instincts for making use of the animal world. Blue dwarves are usually armed with all manner of weapons created from monsters of the deep. Lom herself wears as her armor the shell of an Azure Queen, a particularly fearsome species of giant beetle. Its durability, while impressive, is less important to her than the armor's ability to grow the wings it had in life. Most dwarves, even blue dwarves, hate heights and open spaces, but Lom delights in flight.
She is armed with a variety of other bestial weapons and tools, and has many other bits and bobs of various creatures in her own small hoard. She met Onyx in the depths while both were hunting a juvenile grue that was threatening the blue dwarves of the depths. After working together to drive it back, the two took interest in one another, both impressed by the other’s skill. They have begun a slow dwarven courtship, exchanging treasures and long letters between their widely-spaced meetings.

Dawnspotters:
- Lom's village is the largest, but they have several.
- Named for an ancient legend that they will claim the surface one day, although most members of the tribe don't see this as possible or even beneficial.
- 40% goblins, 30% dwarves, 20% blue dwarves, about 10% miscellaneous other species (trolls, troglodytes, morlocks, dark elves, vampires, shadow courtesans, fomorians, cessarians, firbolgs, greysend, flatfolk and a few very lost humans are all found in the tribe or nominally aligned in small numbers). Allied or at least at peace with larger tribes of several of these species.
- Very inclusive when it comes to members, but wary of outsiders. Lom is unusual in how much she likes total strangers.
- The primary language among the tribe is Kedked, a goblin language.
- While both dwarves and goblins are interfertile with a wide variety of humanoid and fae races, blue dwarves are only fertile with their parent races and one another, and even then at a reduced rate.
- Blue dwarves are less hairy than regular dwarves, but easily grow beards. They tend, however, to lack hair on their heads, and often shave their beards to fit in more with their goblin relatives.
- Rarely, blue dwarves are actually green or purple.
Darksight- Onyx can see perfectly in total darkness. In reverse, bright light harms his eyes.
Dwarven vigor- Onyx is far stronger and has more endurance than a regular human. He can work tirelessly for hours.
The Speech of Birds- Onyx was splashed with his father’s blood when he battled him, and from tasting a dragon’s blood gained the ability to communicate with archosaurs, the closest mundane things to dragons. He cannot necessarily command them, but can usually gain an understanding of them.
Dragon transformation- Onyx becomes a humanoid dragon.
Dragon plating- In his dragon form, Onyx is covered in tough scaly armor, nearly impenetrable. Enough force can pierce his skin, but slashes are likely to merely scratch him.
Breath of Flame- Onyx breathes a powerful blue flame that can melt steel.
Gear:
Andvaranaut- The cursed gold ring that turns its user into a greedy, treasure obsessed dragon. The more it is worn, the more powerful they grow, but at the same time, the temptation also grows with its use. It resembles a twisting serpent made of gold and seems to undulate as it is watched, tantalizing to behold.
The Drakeslayer Sword- The other great legacy of the Drakenskal family. This weapon was forged by the third daughter of the family originator to slay him when he fell to greed. It is a massive two-handed sword with a broad blade, detailed with scales and draconic eyes. It has a few special features. One is the expected; it is impossibly sharp and durable. More than that, though, its its function as a projectile. Onyx can throw the sword and it will come back after striking its target. This was meant to carve the wings of a dragon, but functions just as well for killing anything else. It is carried as an arm-ring, set with fiery gemstones, becoming a sword when commanded by a special phrase.
Goldenguard Shield- A massive round shield that can cover almost all of Onyx's small body. It is incredibly durable, but more importantly, not conductive to heat, allowing him to guard himself against a dragon's flames. It is normally hidden as a watch, becoming a shield only when he wills it.
Bane of Vision- A halberd with an illusory ability that disguises its length, making it seem longer, then shorter than it really is, foiling any attempt to read what distance Onyx should be engaged at. While Onyx preferentially uses the Drakeslayer, the Bane can be more effective against a solitary target. When not in use the Bane is glamoured as a multi-color pen.
