Several years ago…
Through the halls of a local middle school in western Washington state, a lanky red-haired girl with a side ponytail nervously shoved a note in a locker, hurriedly dashing away before anyone saw. She wore a nice pink shirt and black skirt, with a short white cardigan over her shirt. Usually she wore shirts depicting anime characters or mascots…but today was special. A day she had been stressing about for the entire week.
She quickly joined up with a brown-haired girl in her class, wearing a Nirvana shirt and casually waving at Erin. “Yo, did you do it?!” She asked. Erin shifted, looking back at the hallway where she had just come from. “Y-yeah…do you actually think this is a good idea, Emily?” Erin asked, fidgeting.
Emily lightly slapped Erin’s back, and gave a grin. “Look, it’ll be fine! What’s the worst she will say, no? Come on, class is about to start!” Grabbing Erin’s hand, Emily lead Erin into the classroom for their English lesson. In Erin’s mind though, she didn’t think she could read a single word right now.
Hours later, the final bell rang. Erin’s heart fluttered as she stood up, grabbed her bag, and walked out into the hallway. She stepped outside into the Spring sun and made her way up a concrete platform that overlooked the courtyard. On top was a short girl with blond hair, wearing a plaid shirt and black skirt with a small silver chain running along it. She looked over at Erin and waved.
“Hey, Erin! Wanna hang out with me until this guy comes to ask me out? Wonder if it’s Joe…he always seemed to have his eye on me. Maybe it’s Mark…” She mused. This made Erin’s chest grow tighter. Was it too late to call it off now? No, if she left, that would seem like someone stood her friend up and break her heart. No, she had to go through with this!
“S-so you got a love letter, Julie?” Erin asked, Julie looking at Erin and nodding. “Yep! Been a while since I got one of those! Wish they’d get here already…” She said impatiently. Erin swallowed, her palms now getting sweaty. It was now or never.
“A-actually…” Erin began. “I…was the one who wrote that letter.” She finally managed to choke out. Julie fell silent, seeing if Erin was about to reveal this was a joke. Erin continued. “I uh…spent a lot of time thinking of what to s-say…and just wanted to say…you know…we have been friends a while…so..” Erin’s face was now beet red, flailing her hand toward Julie in embarrassment.
Julie looked down at the letter, drawn with many cute characters that she should have realized was Erin’s drawing style. With a sigh, Julie folded up the letter and put it in her backpack pocket. “Erin…I didn’t know you swung that way.” She began. Erin’s heart began to sink. This wasn’t the reaction she was hoping for, which involved both of them hugging by now.
“I uh, thought a guy gave me this letter. Bit uh, weird one of my girlfriends wrote this to me, you know?” Julie was obviously conflicted on how to respond. “I just…can’t accept feelings from a girl, Erin. I’m straight. And I…don’t feel comfortable being friends with someone in love with me. So…”
Erin was frozen in time. The two had watched anime together, shared book recommendations, gone to each other’s houses plenty of times…and that was all coming crashing down. “So…I think we shouldn’t be friends anymore. Sorry.” Julie turned and walked down the steps, and across the field. Erin sat still on the bench, unable to process the events that had just occurred. Tears began to well up on the sides of her eyes. Before she knew it, her head was buried in her hands, drops of water falling to the ground below.
After 2 minutes of being blind to the world…Erin felt someone sit next to her on the bench, and a hand lightly grab onto her leg. She looked up to see a familiar set of green eyes and short dirty blond hair. “Hey…guess it didn’t go well?” The girl asked.
Erin wiped her eyes with her shirt, taking a deep breath before looking at the older girl. “No…no it did not…she stopped being my friend…can’t be friends with someone who loved her…” Erin choked out. The girl wrapped Erin into a hug, Erin gladly hugging back.
“Well, guess she’s the immature one here, Erin. Even if she wasn’t into you, why on Earth would she stop being friends? You’re a great girl and sister, Erin.” She stated, squeezing more. Erin reciprocated the gesture. “Thanks, Skyler…” The redhead told her older sister. Skyler’s high school was near the middle school, so she would stop by to pick Erin up so they could go home together.
After a few minutes, Skyler stood up, holding Erin’s hands to help her up too. Her eyes were red now, and shiny streaks dotted her face. But she appeared to be a little better. “Come on Erin, let’s get you home. Tell you what; I’ll break out the Mario Kart and make you whatever sundae you want, and I’ll hang out with you as long as you want. How’s that?” Skyler asked, smiling. Erin sniffed, but nodded her head. “Thanks, sis…” Erin whimpered. This word seemed to make Skyler’s eye twitch, but she stayed compassionate and led Erin toward the parking lot, where the teleport station was hidden. It was on this day Erin swore to herself; never ask another girl out again.
