Hello fellow Vicers! I’m Kuma and I’m here to chew bubblegum and normalize some concepts… luckily I’m a multi-tasker.
What do I mean with “Normalize Concepts”?
I’m talking about creating strong baseline foundations for things like “Ki”, “Magic”, “Technology” and other similar ideas that are involved in the setting and the characters.
What is the purpose of getting a common ground on these ideas?
Well, is to allow a bit more of equalization when we talk about a concept, knowing what you can do and what you can’t using them. This will also allow new players to understand the concepts more easily and learn to use them faster. It will also serve in the future if we plan any expanded projects about the forum.
Won’t this limit the character creation possibilities?
Is not the intention, nor the goal, of this organization to limit the creativity of the players, really this is more to create a common ground for all the users and allow better communication and play. The foundations we lay here will be used just as a baseline, allowing players to build from there into any unique, bizarre or amazing variation they want.
How’re we going to do this?
Quite easily, we will start with a list of topics to work on and then we will talk about our common conceptions of those topics, add up everything, smooth up any bugs or contradictions and craft a unified explanation. Let’s try to be civilized while we do it. This will serve to strengthen the setting and give the world around our characters even more life.
Proposed Topics (Feel free to ask for more to be added)
- Ki (We could start with this one) - Magic - Other Energies (Natural Energy) - Dimensions - Time - Outer Space - Technology Levels and Limits - Mythical Creatures - Gods - Death - History - Geography - Economics - Genetic Based Powers - Organizations

I consider Ki to be an inner energy that anyone can learn to control. It can be spread through the body (or focused into specific body parts) to make it stronger or it can be pushed into weapons to improve them.

Ki - Inner Energy - Can be focused through the body - It can enhance the whole body or particular body parts (Strength, Speed, Durability, Senses, Reflexes) - Can cover weapons to improve them
I will add - Its a finite resource - Its related to Physical and Spiritual training - Emotions can alter it's properties. - It can be used in elemental attacks through special techniques (Example: Accelerating the Flow of Ki makes hotter) - It can be used as proyectile - It can be "detonated" by the user.

Ki: Other names for Ki (Spiritual Energy, Charka, etc.) I agree i always considered Ki to be something that comes from within the user as opposed to other energies. Ki can be sensed by other Ki users and other ways. Each person ki is a unique color to that person. Examples of Ki Users:
I would like to add to the topics: Natural Energy (probably goes under other energies) History

More - Ki users can also manifest their aura in different ways - Ki users can particulary sense other users with awakended Ki. They can't feel regular human Ki as effectively. - Ki must be awakened.

Only in truly living beings. A golem wouldn't have ki, but the dolls would since they're animated from living flesh. And we should define awakening ki, just for simplicity's sake.

It can be used to levitate and move small objects.

It can be used to levitate and move small objects. I suppose that this is what Haruko does to enhance her skills with knives

I think we covered Ki, the new topic to discuss is Magic!

I'd say unlike ki, magic is something you either inherit through genetics, or acquire though magical means(like through a gem girl gem). So there'd really be no way to "teach" someone magic like they can with ki.

Magic is more complex than ki and allows a long list of abilities like summoning, offensive magic (fireballs, lightning and that sort of thing), defensive magic and almost everything you can think of.

Also, it can be present in non living things like weapons and objects.

Magic is an energy that is all over the world, the humans or creatures capable of using magic draw from this pool of energy for their attacks. Different parts of the world arrived to different conclusions about how to use magic, thus many different styles of magic exists

So maybe this is me but I always considered magic connected to intelligence or intellect somehow. Because magic is something that takes concentration and focus along with probably intense magical mathematics calculations.
Also would Mahoseki Magic, Magic Gems and the Gem Girls go under here as well? Because I could go into detail about that myself.

Same about the Cards. In that case, the intelligence thing is kind of debatable. Arlana isn't very smart, too put it delicately.

And that's the issue with it being an external, worldly power source. The gems are extradimensional. And most people seem to have an internal source, or they wouldn't run out of casting ability like Haruko and Arthur do, casting from mana. Which is separate from their stamina in both.

If it is an inner ability it would be too similar to Ki. I would prefer to make magic a energy that can be perceived and channeled by the people who is born with that ability. Objects are infused with magic and turn into Magical Objects or Relics Mages can draw Magic from their surroundings by a finite ammount, their "Mana" is the threshold of energy they can channel in a day or a determinated period of time. Channeling would require mental discipline and will power. Using Magical objects as focus would make it easier than just flat out casting spells from thin air. Maybe incantations and hand movements are also part of rituals to get the mages into a "Casting State of the Mind" Vapovile waybig1010101 TimePuppy Colt of Personality Obscuris Irisany opinions?

Well, for me, Magic would be a type of energy manipulation that uses external energy. It is used to affect the world around the user unlike Ki which mostly focuses on strengthening the user himself. And while Ki users can channel energy into their weapons, magic is permanent or at least far longer lasting so magical objects can be created.
There's also rune magic which uses symbols to produce effects that affect the world without mana being necessary, although I think mana can be used to make the runes stronger. Or the runes can be used to power up regular magic by serving as a focus like the objects Kuma mentioned.

Is there any way to not make magic vastly better than all other power sources? Perhaps mana burns swifter, or requires more concentration to maintain higher stats, unlike ki?
